En principio se denomina así a todas las técnicas de laboratorio que se usan para aislar ADN o extraerlo en alta pureza, visualizarlo para ver su estado, cortarlo y pegarlo (nacimiento de la Ingeniería genética), amplificar una región en una enorme cantidad de moléculas (clonación de fragmentos en bacterias u otros vectores como virus y PCR), corte de una determinada región con enzimas de restricción para ver si por una mutación se gana o se pierde un sitio de restricción (análisis de mutaciones por RFLP o Restriction fragment lengt polymorphism), que siginifica: diferencias en los tamaños de los fragmentos de restricción debido a polimorfismos en el ADN entre otras.
